1936: Design & Vision

The journey began in 1936 when architect Robert Arthur Bullivant, from Harry Weedon’s practice, envisioned a striking Art Deco cinema for Leicester — combining elegance, symmetry, and innovation.

1938 – Grand Opening as the Odeon Cinema

On 28th July 1938, the Odeon Cinema opened its doors to the public, debuting A Slight Case of Murder. With 2,182 seats, a sweeping façade, and state-of-the-art projection, it quickly became one of Leicester’s proudest landmarks.

1974 – The Multi-Screen Era

By 1974, the Odeon had officially transformed into a three-screen cinema, bringing a new era of entertainment flexibility to Leicester audiences.

1988 – Innovation Continues

In 1988, part of the front stalls was converted to create a fourth screen, enhancing capacity and keeping the venue relevant during the rise of multiplex culture.

1997 – Closure & Protection

After nearly 60 years of operation, the Odeon closed its doors on 16th July 1997. Shortly after, it was awarded Grade II listed status, ensuring its Art Deco elegance would be preserved for generations to come.

Early 2000 – Years of Silence

The building remained dormant for several years, its grand halls empty — yet its iconic façade stood tall, a silent reminder of Leicester’s golden age of cinema.

2005 – Rebirth as Athena

Following a meticulous restoration, the venue was reborn as Athena in 2005. The transformation preserved its original Art Deco charm while introducing modern facilities, creating a versatile and dynamic event space.

2010 – The Growth Years

Athena became a home for conferences, weddings, awards, and global cultural celebrations—earning its place as Leicester’s premier venue for grand experiences.
